TASTE TEST: Dairy-Free Chocolate Chip Morsels

I recently ate my way through bags of dairy-free chocolate chip morsels—so you wouldn’t have to.

These days, grocery shelves are stocked with at least a handful of choices—some brands even swap in plant milks to make milk chocolate morsels, others use unrefined sugars. Here’s my cheat sheet on the latest offerings from old school to artisanal chocolate makers. Please note that all of these morsels are also gluten-free and soy-free.

For the ultimate chocolate loverHu Kitchen Dark Chocolate Gems
These are called gems for a reason. We’re not talking about your average-sized morsel here. That said, I don’t reach for these for everything I make given the large area of melted chocolate each gem delivers—definitely a plus in most baked goods.

For the unrefined sugar baker: Hu Kitchen No Sugar Added Chocolate Chips
I literally tried these chocolate chips for the first time last week—and am happy I did. The morsels themselves are a little smaller than usual (unlike Hu Kitchen’s gems above). Also, while these morsels contain no refined sugar, there is added date sugar.

For the dairy-free old school chocolate lover: Enjoy Life Baking Dark Chocolate Morsels
This was the first dairy-free and soy-free chocolate chips I found 16 years ago—I can’t even explain how thankful I was! While I still keep these morsels in my pantry, I’ve rounded out my chocolate chip collection.

For the milk chocolate lover: Enjoy Life Rice Milk Chocolate Morsels
While I admit that I generally never miss dairy from morsels since I’m a 70% chocolate lover, these morsels will satisfy your milk chocolate cravings.

For the baker with food allergies and sensitivities: Guittard Dairy-Free Morsels
These morsels are free from 14 major allergens and sensitizers, like sulfites and lupin. With three varieties based on cacao content percentages—46%, 55% and 63%—you’ll want to choose your chocolate flavor intensity (the number refers to how much of the product by weight is made from cacao beans).

For the paleo baker: Scharffen Berger Oat Milk Chocolate + Coconut Sugar Baking Chunks
These chunks, which are a bit bigger than morsels, make baking dairy-free and refined sugar-free a cinch. With a cacao content of 43%, you’ll get that classic semi-sweet flavor.

Happy baking!
